Recently, on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Donald Trump announced plans to reopen Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. He directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons to reconstruct and expand the facility.
The prison, located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, would house the nation's most dangerous criminals. It was closed in 1963 due to high operating costs and deteriorating infrastructure. Documents reveal that the upkeep of the facility ranged from $3 to $5 million. Today, Alcatraz is a popular tourist destination and national park. It was once home to notorious inmates like Al Capone.
California Democrat Nancy Pelosi commented on X stating, “Alcatraz closed as a federal penitentiary more than sixty years ago. It is now a very popular national park and major tourist attraction. The President’s proposal is not a serious one.”
The prison closed down 1963 due to high maintenance costs. Trump believes that reopening the prison would serve as a powerful message against crime and "will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE," he said on.
